Garcia knocks out Duarte in first fight since Davis loss


Oscar Duarte, who had won all eleven of his prior fights by knockout, is defeated by Ryan Garcia in the eighth round of their Texas rematch. This is Garcia's first fight under new trainer Derrick James.In Ryan Garcia's first fight after losing to Gervonta Davis in April, he defeated Oscar Duarte via knockout in the eighth round.




Returning to the ring eight months after suffering his lone career loss via knockout to Davis in April, Garcia on Saturday night at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, showed off his strength and speed against Duarte, who had won his prior eleven bouts via knockout.

The fight was broken off in the ninth.




Garcia got the upper hand with a stinging left hook, which he used to launch a barrage of counterpunches. Duarte was knocked to the ground by a left hook and uppercut.




It wasn't until the bout was waved off and referee James Green's count reached ten that Duarte got up.







After parting ways with Joe Goossen, Garcia fought for the first time under new trainer Derrick James. The 25-year-old got out to a strong front-foot start and scored his first points with a right hand and jab in the second round.

Garcia was landing more eye-catching punches, but Duarte rallied through rounds five and six to keep the fight in the balance before Garcia intensified his assault in the eighth to knock out his American opponent.
